The Grain Store, King’s Cross

Since the New King’s Cross station has opened, the whole area around it has transformed. There is an abundance of public space to meet friends or just sit and watch the world go by.

Granary Square is located just behind the station with copious of water jet fountains amongst the paving stones. Hoards of children can be found here on a weekend running through the fountains – Poor parents taking their soaking wet children home on the train.

The square often hosts pop up eateries for the KERB food festival. Here I chose one of its permanent restaurants called The Grain Store.

The Grain Store believes that the vegetables are the star of any meal. They are not a vegetarian restaurant but it was a great place to dine with non meat-eating friends as the options are so exciting.

Being a non pig eater, I have never eaten a sctoch egg. I was very excited to try this vegi version using a lentil mix to surround the egg. Though I’m sure it’s very different from the original, it was perfectly cooked with a runny yoke and was incredibly tasty.

This omelette was teaming with fresh vegetables. Not the tastiest I’ve ever had but a really exciting idea.

I would really recommend The Grain Store to anyone who is interested in trying new food combinations. We went for brunch but I’m excited to go again for their lunch or dinner menu.

Brunch at Duck and Waffle, Heron Tower, London

On my second trip to Duck and Waffle, I made the difficult decision of not ordering the signature dish in favour of sampling some other delights on the menu. We started with salmon sashimi, beautifully served on a block of Himalayan rock salt, topped with a square of watermelon, basil and balsamic vinegar. The block perfectly seasons the fish whilst providing a beautiful presentation.

For main course we shared two dishes. It was brunch so we had to order eggs. Columbian eggs with avocado, tomato and smoked salmon on toasted sour dough.

The mozzarella salad was made up of several elements which beautifully complemented each other in taste and texture. The torn smoked mozzarella toped the salad leaves, surrounded by a balsamic glaze dressing topped with granola, fried sage and amalfi lemon rind.

PIzza East, Kentish Town, London

PIzza East, Kentish Town, London

But that’s not Pizza?

I was fortunate enough to start work in Kentish Town in the same month that a trio of exciting new restaurants opened right by my office complex. These are Dirty Burger, The Chicken Shop & Pizza East. Unfortunately the chicken shop only opens for dinner but I graced the others with my presence during several lunch breaks over the last few months.

It’s not that their pizzas don’t deserve a blog post. They have a traditional wood oven and delicious Italian style simple pizzas. I decided on this occasion to go with the wood oven cooked chicken stew. The broth was full of flavour with vegetables, beans and chicken on the bone. Balanced on the side of the bowl were delicious crispy polenta sticks – a perfect accompaniment! They were some sort of crispy fried dough sticks placed on top, with a herby flavour.

Duck and Waffle – Heron Tower, London

Duck and Waffle - Heron Tower, London

I was really excited to try out one of London’s new attractions. Duck and Waffle restaurant is located on the 40th floor of the Heron tower near Liverpool Street. The view over the London is worth a visit alone!

The signature dish is this Duck and Waffle breakfast. Duck confit with a duck egg, served on a waffle with golden syrup. We had a chat with the executive chef, Daniel Doherty who was really friend and gave the place a personal touch.

Martini cocktail at Bar Fifty-Five, Camden, London (and my new compact camera)

This is my first post from my new compact camera. I’m really pleased with this new Canon, it’s got a great zoom and lots of settings to play with. I took this picture at Bar Fifty-Five in Camden. They have an extensive cocktail menu with some really exciting flavours. My favourite drink of the night was a basil and strawberry martini. This picture is a regular run Martini made by Rich the barman who gave us free shots of taking this picture!
